Tom Lanphier
Tom Lanphier, Full-Time MBA Class of 2027
Recipient of the IMPACT Core Values Award | Operations & Management | Exploring Pharma & Strategy![]()
What industries, functions, or roles are you most interested in pursuing for your internship and beyond?
I’m currently working hard to determine that. Coming into the MBA program, I knew I didn’t have all the answers, and that an MBA would help me discover the next step in my career. I am already utilizing the clubs, 2nd year students, alumni, professors, and career services team to help me on this journey. Through KFBS and my future internship, I am looking to further my operations and management experiences and potentially take steps toward pharmaceuticals and/or strategy.
What drew you to choose UNC Kenan-Flagler for your MBA?
There are numerous reasons KFBS stood out to me, but the three biggest are: 1. Leadership opportunities – KFBS fosters leadership development though a wide variety of clubs, student body representation, and advisory boards. The early and frequent involvement of the career coaching helps hone that development for post-MBA roles. 2. Hands-on approach to learning – I learn best by doing, and KFBS does not shy away from letting their students get first-hand experience through clubs, case competitions, STAR programs, and GEI experiences. 3. Team-oriented environment – my experience on the crew team during undergrad taught me how effective teams can excel to heights an individual cannot reach. KFBS emphasizes the team mentality, in study groups, legacies, cohorts, and alumni. And of course, through the Blue Cup!
What’s been the most meaningful or memorable experience so far in your first year (class, project, club, recruiting, etc.)?
In the first planning session for our orientation legacy presentation (Go Dogwood!), we were in a classroom prompted with the open-ended assignment of sharing our legacy with the rest of the 2027 class. While the group was timid at first, I prompted the group and it wasn’t long before people were contributing from all sides, sharing their thoughts and perspectives. It is so memorable to me because I saw people who were more reserved open up and gain confidence.
How have your classes, MBA Career Services, or peers helped you prepare for recruiting and internship search?
MBA career services during orientation were thorough and provided guidance about how to approach recruiting and finding internships. They’ve been incredibly clear about responsibilities expectations, and best practices.
What are your short-term and long-term career goals?
My short-term goals are to pivot out of tech, to get a summer internship, and to continue to develop my business acumen and leadership skills. My long-term goals to build a career defined by initiative, impact, and integrity.
What’s one lesson or insight you’ve gained during your first year that you think will carry you forward in your MBA journey?
There is a fine line between leading and overbearing.
Is there anyone (e.g., faculty, peers, mentors) you’d like to recognize for their support?
My wife, Raeanne Lanphier, for supporting me through this program, Cassie Meyer and Meitri Patel for being incredible friends from day 1, and my study team, Tony Kanuk, Ethan Avecillas, Satarupa Sakar, and Tatuli Janjgava.
