Nia Allison, Evening MBA Class of 2026
Sr. Event Marketing Specialist | Lenovo

Briefly describe your experience in landing this role. What challenges did you overcome?

My journey with Lenovo began in 2020 as a sales intern, where I built a great connection with a recruiter. Two years later, that same recruiter reached out about a marketing opportunity that aligned with my long-term goals. Transitioning from sales into marketing came with its challenges, particularly learning how to apply what I’d studied in school to real-world marketing strategies. Through hands-on experience and continued learning, I was able to bridge that gap and grow into the role.

How did UNC, Kenan-Flagler Business School, the MBA program, or MBA Career Services help you secure this opportunity?

The UNC Kenan-Flagler MBA program has helped me connect classroom learning to real-world marketing. The focus on strategy, communication, and leadership has strengthened the skills I use daily at Lenovo, and the supportive network has been key in helping me grow in my career.

What are your long-term career goals?

My long-term goal is to continue building a career in marketing where I can combine creativity, strategy, and leadership. I want to lead initiatives that not only grow a brand but also create meaningful connections.

What’s one lesson or insight you hope every MBA student takes with them after graduation?

I hope every MBA student leaves knowing that growth doesn’t stop at graduation, professionally or personally. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to stay curious, ask questions, and never be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Every challenge or change is an opportunity to learn something new about yourself.

Can you share a moment or success story that’s stuck with you during your time in the program?

A moment that really stuck with me was during a team project where we had to solve a real business challenge for a well-known brand. Seeing how each teammate’s background contributed to our final idea showed me the true value of collaboration. It was one of those moments that reminded me of one of the reasons why I joined this program: to grow, learn from others, and see how different perspectives can create something meaningful.

Is there anyone (e.g., faculty, peers, mentors) you’d like to recognize for their support?

I’d love to give a huge thank-you to my family and friends for always being in my corner, the amazing friends I’ve made in the program, career services, and my former manager deserves a special shoutout for encouraging me to take the leap into this program and supporting me from the beginning.
